Liner Customization Process: Six Stages From Drawing to Factory Inspection

Many buyers hit the same wall: the machine is an older or non-standard model, and no off-the-shelf liner fits. Or a part is found, installed, and fails within days because it does not seat properly. That is when customization is needed. Yet the word is used loosely in this industry — some call it customization when they simply re-drill mounting holes, others take the drawing and subcontract the casting. After 40 years in wear casting since the 1980s, the Grand Heavy team breaks a genuine liner customization into six stages: what happens, what you should receive, and where problems most often appear.

I. What Liner Customization Actually Customizes

First, a clarification: liner customization is not merely producing an identically shaped part to a drawing. Genuine customization has three layers, and dropping any one degrades the result:

  • Geometric customization: Matching mounting holes, bolt pocket angles and cavity profile to your equipment drawing or a physical survey. The base layer;
  • Material customization: Selecting among manganese steel, high chrome alloy and titanium carbide composite according to abrasiveness and impact, then fixing alloy ratios and heat treatment. This layer determines life;
  • Zoned customization: Using different materials or insert densities across zones of the same crusher — for a cone chamber, the upper edge takes impact while the lower zone takes abrasion, so the design can be split.

This is why a drawing without duty data is an incomplete brief: the same shape performs very differently in a granite chamber versus a limestone chamber, and the optimal alloy differs accordingly.

II. A Field Lesson: Rework Caused by Missing Duty Data

We once received a customization inquiry: a hand-drawn dimensional sketch with the request to make a batch of cone crusher bowl liners in manganese steel. The drawing was sufficient, so we asked about the duty. The reply was simply that it was for crushing stone and that we should build to standard.

We produced the first batch in standard manganese. After installation the customer reported that wear was far faster than expected. Further discussion revealed the site was crushing hard rock with high quartz content, far more abrasive than typical limestone. In such purely abrasive duty with limited impact, manganese steel does not work harden sufficiently and wears quickly.

The fix was to reassess the duty, move to a titanium carbide insert solution with zoned cavity design, and codify a rule in our process: every inquiry must confirm the duty triad — material type and hardness, feed lump size, machine model and cavity profile. Without all three, we do not enter alloy design.

III. The Six-Stage Customization Flow (Save This)

Stage What Happens What You Should Receive Common Failure
1. Duty confirmationConfirm material and hardness, feed lump size, machine model and cavity, target outputDuty confirmation sheet or draft technical proposalDrawing without duty data leads to alloy mismatch
2. Drawing conversionConvert customer drawing or survey into a foundry process drawing with shrinkage and machining allowanceFoundry process drawing for your sign-offMolding straight from the part drawing causes dimensional drift
3. Alloy designSelect the material system and element ratios per duty; specify heat treatment regimeMaterial proposal with element ranges and treatment requirementsOne recipe for all duties yields disappointing life
4. Casting and heat treatmentMolding and pouring; water toughening or quench and temper per regime, fully recordedMelting heat number and heat treatment recordsOutsourced or unrecorded treatment leaves toughness unverified
5. Machining and inspectionMachine mounting holes and mating faces; dimensional inspection and material samplingDimensional inspection report and material certificateVisual check only leads to poor fit on installation
6. DeliveryBatch numbering and archiving, shipping documents, installation guidanceBatch traceability plus full shipping documentationNo batch number means no traceability if problems arise

Note: specific technical limits and inspection standards per stage follow the agreed technical protocol and the current standard text. [To be added: customization protocol template and inspection standard references]

IV. Insider Gotchas

  • Re-drilled holes sold as customization: Welding over or re-drilling an off-the-shelf part while leaving alloy and cavity untouched — real customization requires a written material proposal;
  • Order taken, casting subcontracted: Traders pass the job to a third foundry and lose control of process and heat treatment, leaving accountability undefined — establish who actually manufactures;
  • Molding without a process drawing: Skipping conversion means shrinkage and machining allowance are guessed, producing dimensional deviation and holes that do not line up;
  • Unrecorded or outsourced heat treatment: Heat treatment governs toughness; sending it to an unrecorded workshop abandons quality control — require process records for custom parts.

V. When You Do NOT Need Customization

  • Standard mainstream machines with conventional feed: If your equipment is common and the material is routine, buying standard stock parts is faster and cheaper;
  • Emergency repairs with a tight deadline: Customization involves drawing conversion and pattern work, so lead time exceeds stock. If the line cannot wait, look for a fitting stock item first;
  • Single-piece trials before duty data exists: Without reliable duty figures, run standard parts for one cycle to gather wear data before customizing;
  • Very tight one-off project budgets: Pattern and engineering costs cannot be amortized on short projects, where standard parts win on value.
Scenario Recommended Route
Non-standard, older or imported machinesFull customization flow, starting with the duty triad
Mainstream machine with hard abrasive rockTry standard geometry with upgraded alloy first, then customize zoning
Mainstream machine with routine materialBuy standard stock parts; customization is unnecessary

FAQ

  • Q: What information is needed to customize a liner? A: The duty triad is mandatory: material type and hardness, feed lump size, machine model and cavity profile. Provide a drawing if available, otherwise a physical survey or a worn sample.
  • Q: How long does customization take? A: Lead time depends on whether a new pattern is required and on alloy and heat treatment complexity. The schedule follows the mutually confirmed technical proposal. [To be added: standard lead time table]
  • Q: Is quality different from stock parts? A: The control logic is the same, but custom parts add alloy design and cavity design steps, which must be documented, confirmable and traceable.
  • Q: How can we tell real customization from re-drilled holes? A: Look for a material proposal. Real customization states the alloy and heat treatment plan based on duty; a part with only new holes is a modified stock item.
  • Q: What is the Grand Heavy customization flow? A: Grand Heavy customizes to drawing or sample for jaw and cone crushers as well as non-standard duties, following duty confirmation, drawing conversion, alloy design, casting and heat treatment, machining and inspection, and delivery — with a material certificate per batch.

VI. Final Verdict

The value of liner customization is not the ability to produce a shape but to align duty, alloy and cavity profile — the six stages matter because each one secures the correctness of the next.
