The first hard decision for every new aggregate producer is rarely money — it is equipment selection: jaw crusher or impact crusher? Both look like iron boxes, yet they differ greatly in price, application and running cost. Drawing on 40 years of front-line service data of Grand Heavy in the crusher wear parts industry, this article compares the two machines across 6 factors so that you can match the right crusher to your material.
This is the most essential difference, from which all other differences follow.
Jaw crusher: the moving jaw periodically approaches and leaves the fixed jaw, and material is crushed by squeezing and splitting between the two jaw plates (tooth plates). It works like a vice repeatedly breaking stones — compression crushing.
Impact crusher: blow bars mounted on a high-speed rotor throw material violently against impact plates, where it is shattered — impact crushing. It wins by kinetic energy, like a hammer breaking stones.
The principles determine that: a jaw crusher handles hard rock but yields coarser output; an impact crusher produces fine, well-shaped aggregate but fears hard rock — blow bars wear out extremely fast on hard stone.
| Material | Typical rocks | Recommended crusher |
|---|---|---|
| High hardness (>200 MPa) | granite, basalt, iron ore, river pebble | Jaw crusher (secondary: cone crusher) |
| Medium hardness | limestone, dolomite, marble | Jaw crusher primary + impact crusher shaping |
| Medium-low hardness, brittle | coal gangue, weathered rock, shale, construction waste | Impact crusher can be fed directly |
| High moisture, sticky | wet clayish material | Jaw crusher runs steadier (impact crusher clogs easily) |
In short: the harder the rock, the more a jaw crusher is favored; the softer, the more an impact crusher shines. Using an impact crusher on granite can wear out blow bars within days; crushing limestone with a jaw crusher alone works, but grain shape and efficiency are inferior to the combination of jaw crusher + impact crusher.
Impact crushing breaks material along its natural texture, so the finished product has high cubic content, few flaky particles and rich angular surfaces — more competitive for high-grade commercial concrete and value-added manufactured sand. Jaw crushing yields more flaky particles and is generally used for primary crushing; if aggregate sales require good grain shape, reshaping at the secondary stage is needed.
With a large feed opening and moderate reduction ratio, the jaw crusher covers models from a few tons to over 2,000 tons per hour — the primary crusher with the widest capacity range in the world. Impact crushers mostly range from 50 to 600 tons per hour, focusing on medium-fine crushing. In energy terms, impact crushing consumes more electricity per ton than compression crushing — the same stone is broken finer, so it naturally costs more power. Follow the rule: primary crushing looks at capacity, secondary crushing looks at grain shape.
You buy the machine once, but replace wear parts month after month — that is the constant item in operating cost:
| Machine | Key wear parts | Typical life | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jaw crusher | moving/fixed jaw plates, toggle plates, side liners | jaw plates 2~4 months | high manganese steel; wear is regular, order spares in advance |
| Impact crusher | blow bars, impact plates/liners | blow bars 1~3 months | life drops sharply on hard rock; match material first |
For a detailed lifespan table of all wear parts and how to extend it, see our guide Crusher Wear Parts Lifespan Table on this website. When purchasing, material identification matters — beware of cheap high-manganese-steel plates of poor quality.
A jaw crusher is structurally simple: replacing a set of jaw plates or toggle plates can restore production the same day, with low skill requirements for maintenance staff. An impact crusher has a high-speed rotor; after replacing blow bars a dynamic balance check is mandatory, otherwise vibration grows and damages bearings in a chain reaction. For small mines without a dedicated mechanic, the jaw crusher is clearly easier to live with.
First, primary crushing of hard rock such as granite and basalt: the jaw crusher is the only right answer, with a cone crusher as secondary. Do not force an impact crusher onto hard rock. Second, limestone aggregates with shape requirements: jaw crusher for primary, then impact crusher for secondary shaping, giving good shape and low cost. Third, construction waste recycling and mobile operation: a mobile impact crusher plant can be fed directly and eats brick and concrete together. Fourth, small capacity under 50 t/h with limited budget: a single jaw crusher with a vibrating screen is the most economical; expand with a secondary crusher later.
Q1: Can a jaw crusher and an impact crusher work in series?
Yes — it is the golden combination for medium-hardness material: jaw crusher for primary, impact crusher for secondary shaping, with good grain shape and low line cost.
Q2: How to configure a 100~300 t/h line?
Hard rock: jaw + cone + screening. Medium/soft rock: jaw + impact + screening. Contact us for a free configuration plan based on feed size, clay content and shape requirements.
Q3: Are wear parts of the two machines interchangeable?
No. Jaw crushers consume jaw plates and toggle plates; impact crushers consume blow bars and impact plates. Grand Heavy customizes both to drawings, with high manganese steel, super-high manganese steel and Mn18Cr2 grades available.
Q4: When must jaw plates / blow bars be replaced?
Replace jaw plates when 2/3 of tooth height is worn, and blow bars when 1/3 of thickness remains. Forcing them further drags the rotor and moving jaw — a small loss becomes a major overhaul.
