"What material should I choose for my bowl liner?" "Is Mn18Cr2 really worth the extra cost over standard Mn13?" — these are among the most frequently asked questions we hear from the hundreds of quarries and mines we serve.
The bowl liner (concave) and mantle of a cone crusher are the core wear components of the entire crushing chamber. Choosing the wrong material wastes money and directly affects product shape, throughput and downtime frequency. Grand Heavy, a source manufacturer with 40 years in crusher parts and more than 20 patents, serving major groups like CNBM and Conch Cement, explains the manganese steel choosing logic once and for all.
Mn13 (ZGMn13) — the classic general-purpose grade
Containing 11-14% manganese and water-toughened at high temperature, Mn13 develops excellent work-hardening properties under strong impact: surface hardness can jump from HB200 to over HB500. However, its initial hardness is low, so in medium-to-low-impact, high-abrasion conditions it does not harden sufficiently and wears out noticeably faster.
Best for: limestone, dolomite, coal gangue and other medium-soft materials with strong impact in primary or secondary crushing.
Mn18Cr2 (Mn18Cr2Mo) — the mainstream upgrade
Adding 2-3% chromium and 0.5-1% molybdenum to the high-manganese base refines the grain structure, accelerates work-hardening and raises peak hardness. Under the same duty, Mn18Cr2 lasts 30-50% longer than Mn13 and is the most popular upgrade for secondary and tertiary cone crusher liners today.
Best for: granite, basalt, river pebble, iron ore — medium-to-hard rock. The cost-performance winner for most operations.
Mn22CrMo — built for extreme conditions
Manganese raised to 20-24%, chromium 2-3%, molybdenum 0.5-1%. The ultra-high manganese content maintains outstanding toughness and hardening capacity even under extreme impact and heavy abrasion, adding another 15-25% of life over Mn18Cr2.
Best for: high-silica granite (SiO2 above 65%), iron ore, hard quartzite, and large lines where downtime is extremely costly.
Dimension one: rock hardness and SiO2 content
SiO2 below 50% (limestone, sandstone): Mn13 is sufficient and most economical. SiO2 50-65% (granite, basalt): Mn18Cr2 is recommended; the life extension more than covers the higher purchase price. SiO2 above 65% (hard quartzite): Mn22CrMo is advised, because the cost of change-out downtime far exceeds the material upcharge.
Dimension two: cavity type and impact intensity
Coarse cavity (CSS above 30 mm): large rock and high impact mean Mn13 work-hardens fully and delivers the best value. Medium cavity (CSS 10-30 mm): moderate impact; Mn18Cr2 offers the best all-round performance. Fine or extra-fine cavity (CSS below 10 mm): material lingers longer with more compressive cycles but less impact — Mn13 cannot harden adequately, and Mn18Cr2 or Mn22CrMo is the correct choice.
Dimension three: cost per crushed tonne, not per part
A set of Mn18Cr2 bowl liners costs 15-20% more than Mn13, but lasts 30-50% longer. On a 500 tph hard-rock line: Mn13 bowl liner costs roughly 80,000 RMB per set with a 3-month life, equalling 320,000 RMB per year. Mn18Cr2 at 100,000 RMB per set with a 4.5-month life costs about 267,000 RMB per year — saving over 50,000 RMB annually, before even counting the production gain from fewer change-outs.
First: demand a material test report. A reputable foundry provides spectral analysis (chemistry) and hardness test results. For Mn18Cr2, manganese must exceed 17% and chromium above 1.5%. If manganese is below 16%, what you are getting is "Mn13 labeled as Mn18".
Second: confirm heat treatment. Manganese steel castings must be water-toughened at 1050-1100 degrees Celsius to achieve optimal toughness. Insufficient temperature or holding time leads to coarse grains, retained carbides, and cracking within days of installation.
Third: choose a supplier capable of matching your actual conditions. Wear life on the same cone crusher model can vary by a factor of two depending on the specific rock being crushed. A manufacturer who can adjust the alloy formula based on your material report is the partner worth keeping.
Grand Heavy operates foundries at its Foshan headquarters and Changsha base. Every part is individually tested for chemical composition and hardness before shipment. We customize alloy formulations to your specific rock and provide full quality traceability.
Q1: Can you tell Mn13 from Mn18Cr2 by eye?
No. Both have the same silvery metallic sheen. The only reliable method is spectral analysis — always verify the manufacturer test report rather than relying on verbal claims.
Q2: Can I hard-face weld a Mn13 liner instead of upgrading to Mn18Cr2?
Hard-facing can only patch local wear zones and cannot substitute for a bulk material upgrade. The weld heat-affected zone alters the base microstructure and can propagate cracks. If the liner needs more life, the better investment is a higher-grade casting.
Q3: Can the mantle and bowl liner be different grades?
Technically yes, but matching grades is recommended. The mantle takes higher impact; if budget is tight, prioritize the better grade on the mantle. In practice, both wear as a pair — when one fails the other is near end of life — so uniform grades simplify planned change-outs.
Q4: What is the typical lead time?
Standard sizes 7-15 days; non-standard or oversized 15-25 days. Grand Heavy runs dual foundries in Foshan and Changsha; common sizes carry safety stock and rush orders are available. Tel: +86-0757-18144901190.
