Jaw Plate Buying Guide: Material Identification, Price Traps and Replacement Cycles

The jaw plate is the only wear part of a jaw crusher that directly bites into the material. Its quality, price, and replacement timing directly determine the crushing cost of the whole production line. On the market, jaw plates of the same model can differ by over a thousand yuan per ton in price, yet actual service life may differ by more than double — the difference is not luck, but material and workmanship. This guide gives you a practical set of selection criteria across three dimensions: material identification, price traps, and replacement cycles. The content comes from the Grand Heavy front-line service experience — we have been deep in mining equipment for over 40 years, hold 20+ patents, and maintain long-term partnerships with CNBM, Conch Cement and other large groups, supplying jaw plates and complete sets of wear parts to aggregate plants and mineral processing plants.

1. Understand the Material First: Know High Manganese Steel, Avoid Being Fooled

The mainstream material for jaw plates is high manganese steel (ZGMn13 series). Its defining feature is "the more it is hit, the harder it gets": under heavy impact loads the surface rapidly work-hardens to about HB500, while the core keeps sufficient toughness and does not fracture. This "hard outside, tough inside" characteristic makes high manganese steel ideal for coarse crushing with heavy impact.

But even within "high manganese steel" the details matter. Verify four points when purchasing:

• Chemical composition. Standard high manganese steel contains 11%–14% Mn and 0.9%–1.3% C, with an Mn/C ratio of at least 10. Sub-standard Mn or C compromises both hardening and toughness.
• Material certificate. A proper foundry runs furnace-front analysis on every heat and dares to provide a composition report with each batch.
• Heat treatment. High manganese steel must be water toughened (quenched from about 1050°C). "Black-skin" parts without proper heat treatment often last only one third as long.
• Casting quality. Shrinkage, porosity, slag inclusion and cracks are the four major casting hazards — always inspect non-machined surfaces on delivery.

the Grand Heavy full range of jaw plates, including the fixed jaw plate series, uses premium high manganese steel with strict water toughening. The formulation has been iterated over 40 years and continuously improved through industry-university cooperation with Central South University on chamber and tooth profile design. A material certificate is provided with every batch, and service life is 30%+ longer than commodity parts.

2. See Through Three Price Traps: How "Cheap Parts" Cheat You

Many buyers only look at unit price: one jaw plate a few thousand yuan cheaper "saves" tens of thousands a year. But the true cost follows this formula:

True cost = purchase price × number of replacements + downtime losses. A plate half the price but with half the life, plus labor, lifting and production loss at every changeover, ends up costing more overall.

The three most common cost-cutting tricks in the industry:

• Weight reduction trap. Same external dimensions but 10%–15% lighter — sections thinned to save material, less wear volume, naturally shorter life.
• Composition shrinkage. Mn and C content pushed below the standard minimum; factory price drops sharply at the cost of a thin hardened layer and high cracking risk.
• Skipped processes. Skipping inspection and water toughening, shipping blanks after simple grinding.

Three quick on-site checks: weigh it, check the certificate, ask about the process — put old and new plates of the same model on the scale and reject any that is obviously light; be cautious with suppliers who cannot provide composition reports; walk away from those who cannot explain their heat treatment.

Jaw crusher application

One more reminder: jaw plates are not universal parts. The tooth profile and fixing holes must match the crusher to deliver designed performance. Grand Heavy adheres to an "original-fit" principle — jaw plate tooth profiles are custom-developed for each crusher chamber. That is the fundamental reason our parts last 30%–50% longer than commodity ones: decades of data accumulated in the curves of every tooth plate.

3. Replacement Cycle Reference: When Must You Change Jaw Plates?

Under conventional aggregate conditions, high manganese steel jaw plates last about 2–4 months, depending on material hardness, silica content, daily operating hours and feeding uniformity. We recommend an inspection log following this table:

Wear StateTypical SignsRecommended Action
Light wearTooth tips rounded; output and gradation basically normalContinue production; record cumulative operating hours
Medium wearAbout 60% of tooth height worn; coarser output, noticeably lower hourly productionOrder early; schedule a planned replacement
Heavy wearTooth surface nearly flat; local cracks or frequent loosening of fixing boltsStop and replace immediately to protect the moving jaw body

Two operating habits also extend life significantly: feed uniformly to avoid segregation and localized rapid wear; and adjust the discharge opening in time — tightening it slightly in the late wear stage can squeeze out about 10% more service time. Check accompanying parts such as the lower side liner at the same time; do not let small parts drag down the whole machine.

4. Why Are More and More Mines Choosing Grand Heavy Jaw Plates?

• 40 years of technical accumulation — from technology introduction in the 1980s to independent innovation, backed by 20+ patents; the formulation gets more precise with every iteration.
• Industry-university support — deep cooperation with Central South University on chamber and tooth profile design for higher crushing efficiency and more uniform wear under the same conditions.
• Validated by SOE projects — long-term service on benchmark projects of CNBM, Conch Cement and other large groups, proven under high-intensity continuous operation.
• Original-fit advantage — PE and PEX series crushers and jaw plates developed as one; more precise tooth meshing and 30%–50% longer life than commodity parts.
• Fast response — offices in Guangzhou, Foshan and Changsha working together; common specifications in stock; 24-hour response so your production line never waits.

If you are struggling with frequent plate changes, unstable life, or oversized output, send us your material properties (hardness, silica content, maximum feed size) and crusher model — Grand Heavy engineers will provide free material selection and replacement planning advice.

FAQ

Q1: Why do high manganese steel jaw plates of the same type differ in life by double?
A: The difference lies in three places — whether the chemical composition meets standard, whether water toughening was done properly, and whether casting density passes inspection. Cutting corners on any one causes a cliff-like drop in life.

Q2: Are cheap jaw plates really more economical?
A: Calculate the total: purchase price × number of replacements + downtime losses. Low-quality plates with short life and frequent changes, plus lifting labor and production losses, usually cost far more overall than genuine parts.

Q3: How do I know my jaw plates need replacement?
A: Remember two signals — over 60% of tooth height worn, causing lower output and coarser product; or cracks and bolt loosening. Either one means it is time to arrange replacement and stock the new plates.
