Manufactured Sand Production Line: Raw Material, Process and Quality Control

Manufactured sand is the inevitable answer as natural sand resources tighten, but producing sand and producing compliant sand are two different things. Many lines start up with fineness modulus apparently on target, only for ready-mix plants to report poor workability and high water demand — the cause usually lies not in the machine but in raw material fit, process route and product quality control being left unconnected. After 40 years in mining equipment and wear casting since the 1980s, serving clients including CNBM and Conch Cement, the Grand Heavy team sets out the complete configuration logic.

Quick View Verdict
Quality coreNot fineness modulus but gradation and particle shape — modulus is only a summary figure
Nature of sand makingIt is shaping (improving particle shape), not simply grinding finer
Stone powderA resource rather than an impurity — the key is controlling total content and MB value
Configuration logicRaw material sets the ceiling, process sets the floor, equipment sets stability
Common mistakeTuning the machine against fineness modulus alone, ignoring gradation, powder and shape

I. The Quality Metrics That Define Manufactured Sand

Manufactured sand is judged under the current standard GB/T 14684 for sand for construction [To be added: standard version year]. Five metrics matter, and understanding their relative weight is the prerequisite for configuring a line:

  • Particle gradation: The distribution across size fractions. Well-graded sand has low void content and lower water demand. This is the first metric for concrete performance;
  • Fineness modulus (MX): An overall coarseness figure — coarse sand around 3.7-3.1, medium 3.0-2.3, fine 2.2-1.6. It is a weighted average, so the same value can correspond to completely different gradations;
  • Stone powder content and MB value: Sand making inevitably produces fines below 0.075 mm. Stone powder is not an impurity — a moderate amount improves workability; clay content, characterised by MB value, is what harms. Control the clay, not the powder;
  • Particle shape (flaky content): Manufactured sand is angular, and flaky particles reduce both strength and workability. The shaping capability of the sand making machine governs this directly;
  • Soundness and crushing index: Reflects the compressive resistance of the sand, determined mainly by the parent rock and not improvable by process.

The message is clear: gradation and shape are what line configuration must solve, while fineness modulus is only a surface indicator. Lines that tune purely against modulus often hit the number while concrete performance still lags.

II. A Field Lesson: On-Target Modulus, Poor Workability

A manufactured sand plant we served held fineness modulus steady at around 2.6 (medium sand), yet downstream ready-mix plants kept reporting poor workability and water demand well above natural sand. The plant repeatedly adjusted the sand making machine, modulus stayed compliant, and the problem persisted.

A full sieve analysis revealed two issues:

  • Gradation gap: One middle size fraction was clearly missing with particles concentrated at both ends. The weighted average happened to fall in the compliant band, masking the defect — a textbook case of the number passing while performance fails;
  • Unstable stone powder content: Unsteady feed and fluctuating screening efficiency made powder content drift widely, destabilising concrete mix design.

The fix had three steps: reconfigure the screening stage with better screen aperture sequencing and deck count to restore gradation continuity; stabilise feed to reduce powder fluctuation; and optimise the crusher cavity and rotor speed to improve shape. Water demand fell noticeably and the ready-mix feedback normalised.

The configuration rule recorded: quality control in a manufactured sand line sits mainly in screening and feed stability, not only in the sand making machine. Adjusting the crusher alone fixes neither gradation gaps nor powder drift.

III. Production Line Configuration Table (Save This)

Dimension What to Check Recommended Note
Raw materialCrushing index, clay content, silica contentLimestone, granite, basalt and river gravel all work, but test the rock firstRock sets the quality ceiling that process cannot change
Pre-treatmentIs clay content highAdd washing or de-claying where clay is highClay is the root of MB value exceedance
Sand making machineShaping-led or crushing-ledVertical shaft impact crusher (strong shaping, good shape)Roll and rod mills also make sand but differ in shape and capacity
Process routeDry or wetDry with air classification where water is scarce; wet where water is plentifulDry routes need powder separation equipment
ScreeningGradation continuityMulti-deck screening with proper aperture sequencingGradation gaps are solved in screening, not in the crusher
Powder controlTotal powder and MB valueAir classifier for dry routes; sand washing recovery for wetControl clay rather than powder
Feed stabilityDoes powder content driftInstall a steady feeding deviceFeed fluctuation is the source of quality fluctuation
Wear partsPart life and ease of replacementThrowing heads and flow plates matched to duty, replaced as weight-matched setsSee the linked article below

Four-step configuration: 1. Test the rock (sets the ceiling); 2. Choose dry or wet by water availability; 3. Configure crusher and screening to the product requirement; 4. Add classification or washing for powder control. Exact specifications require material trials and target capacity calculations. [To be added: material trial and capacity configuration records]

IV. Insider Gotchas

  • Tuning against fineness modulus alone: Modulus is a weighted average, so identical values can hide completely different gradations. A contract specifying only modulus leaves the door open to gradation defects — acceptance must review the full sieve curve;
  • Washing all stone powder away: Over-washing removes beneficial fines, worsens gradation and can raise water demand. Separate powder from clay using the MB value;
  • Underrating screening control over gradation: Gradation gaps most often come from screening configuration (poor aperture sequencing, too few decks) rather than the crusher;
  • Replacing wear parts individually: Throwing heads and flow plates must be replaced as weight-matched sets; partial replacement unbalances the rotor, harming both shape and wear life. See Sand Making Machine Wear Parts.

V. When NOT to Configure This Way

  • High clay content with no pre-treatment: MB value will exceed limits and no amount of machine tuning will fix it — remove the clay first;
  • Output-only lines that ignore gradation: Running the crusher flat out for tonnage usually sacrifices shape and gradation, and the cost surfaces later at the ready-mix plant;
  • Wet process in water-scarce regions: Wet routes consume a lot of water and need effluent treatment; evaluate dry plus air classification instead;
  • One screen aperture for multiple product grades: Different grades need different screen configurations; a single setup leaves some fractions out of specification.
Project Profile Recommended Route
Large aggregate base with sand plantThree-stage crushing plus VSI sand making plus multi-deck screening plus classification or washing, with full quality control
Mid-size dedicated sand plantVSI centred, with emphasis on screening and feed stability
High clay content projectsDe-claying or washing ahead of the sand making circuit

FAQ

  • Q: What fineness modulus is suitable? A: Medium sand (roughly 3.0-2.3) is the most widely applicable, but modulus is only a summary figure. Two sands at 2.6 can have entirely different gradations, so review the full sieve curve as well.
  • Q: Should stone powder be washed out? A: Not wholesale. Stone powder is not an impurity and a moderate amount improves workability; the target is clay content measured by MB value. Over-washing removes beneficial fines and harms gradation.
  • Q: How do we choose a sand making machine? A: Vertical shaft impact crushers dominate because of their shaping capability and good particle shape. Roll and rod mills have their own niches. The key is deciding whether shaping or crushing leads.
  • Q: How do we fix non-compliant gradation? A: Check the screening stage first (aperture sequencing and deck count), then feed stability. Gradation gaps are usually a screening issue, and adjusting the crusher alone rarely helps.
  • Q: What sand making parts does Grand Heavy supply? A: Throwing heads, blade heads, flow guide plates and upper and lower flow plates, matched to model and duty with a material certificate per batch. See also screen mesh selection and tensioning.

VI. Final Verdict

Configuration logic comes down to one line: raw material sets the ceiling, process sets the floor, and screening plus feed stability set consistency. Quality control is not about hitting a fineness modulus target but about keeping gradation continuous, shape good and powder controlled.
