What Is a TiC Composite Liner? The Metallurgy Behind 2-3x Longer Wear Life

A TiC composite liner — known in the trade as the starry-sky liner — is a metallurgically bonded wear part made by presetting titanium carbide (TiC) rods on the working face of a high-manganese steel body and casting both together in a single pour. The rod tips spread across the surface like stars, hence the nickname. It is not a coating and not a weld overlay: the armor grows inside the steel. I. The Metallurgy: One Pour, Not a Weld

Wear parts fail in only two ways: gradual abrasion or impact fracture. Standard manganese steel work-hardens to about HB500, which loses the race against high-silica rock. The TiC design separates duties:

• TiC rods take the abrasion: microhardness roughly 1400-2900 HV (Mohs 9-9.5, near corundum), far above the hardened manganese surface (per material test reports);
• Manganese body takes the impact: water-toughened at about 1050 deg C in line with GB/T 5680, so the tough core absorbs shock without cracking.

Production runs three steps: rod layout (denser packing in the highest-wear zones such as the lower crushing chamber), single-pour casting (rods bond metallurgically with the melt), then water toughening. Because the bond layer is metallurgical, impact loads spread through the whole body and the rods do not loosen or pop out.
