How to Configure a Slag Powder Production Line: Vertical Roller Mill Plan and Key Parameters

Slag powder (ground granulated blast furnace slag, GGBS) is a cementitious supplementary material made by finely grinding quenched ironmaking slag. Grade S95 product requires a specific surface area above 400 m2/kg under GB/T 18046; used as a cement replacement it cuts cost while improving concrete durability and chloride resistance — high-strength pipe piles, marine concrete and mass hydraulic structures all rely on it. The first iron rule of slag grinding: with as-received moisture in the teens of percent and high abrasiveness, the vertical roller mill (drying, grinding and classifying in one) is the dominant solution worldwide. After 40 years serving cement and slag grinding, the lesson at Grand Heavy is that the fate of a slag VRM line rests not on the mill nameplate but on how well three things are managed: moisture, grinding bed, and roller tyres. This guide covers the process flow, the key parameters, one acceptance table, and the classic lesson of a line that kept tripping on vibration.

Quick View Verdict
Why VRM dominatesWet, abrasive slag plus integral drying — the great majority of slag grinding worldwide runs on vertical roller mills
Core quality parametersSpecific surface area (S95 requires 400 m2/kg plus under GB/T 18046; common control band higher) + activity index (7-day / 28-day)
Core operating parametersBed thickness, grinding pressure, in-mill water spray, outlet temperature — an unstable bed is the source of every vibration trip
Cost coreTyre and table liner cost per tonne — slag glass is abrasive; wear part life decides unit cost
The costliest errorSloppy slag yard drainage management — wildly fluctuating feed moisture repeatedly destroys the bed; output and quality lose together
How to accountSystem power (45 to 60 kWh/t range; calibrate on site) plus heat for drying — power-only accounting misses the furnace bill
Relation to cement grindingSeparate grinding then blending is the mainstream — slag ground alone to high surface area, blend ratio flexed at cement batching

I. Process Flow and Equipment Structure

Standard process flow (five stages)

  • 1. Slag receiving and yard drainage: quenched slag hauled to the yard, stockpiled in zones and drained (turned or sheltered as needed) — the target is a stable feed moisture band; this is the first gate of the whole line;
  • 2. Reclaiming, conveying and weighing: reclaimer + belt weigher + iron removal (slag carries iron granules that punish the rollers) — conveying selection in feeder and conveyor selection;
  • 3. VRM drying and grinding: vertical roller mill (rollers + table + hydraulic loading + integral separator) with a hot furnace (blast furnace gas, pulverised coal or natural gas) as the drying source, negative-pressure operation;
  • 4. Classifying and collecting: fines leave with the airflow to the baghouse as product, coarse fraction falls back for regrinding, reject (hard grains) leaves via the external circulation;
  • 5. Storage and dispatch: product conveyed to silos, segregated by specific surface area, loaded to bulk trucks; gypsum or activators dosed online by ratio.

Four parameter groups

  • Quality: specific surface area (S95 requires 400 m2/kg plus under GB/T 18046; common control 420 to 460), activity index (7-day / 28-day), loss on ignition, chloride; the 3 to 32 micron fraction governs activity;
  • Operating: bed thickness (the lifeline of a VRM), grinding pressure (on the high side for slag), in-mill spray water (bed stability trim), outlet temperature (drying vs baghouse condensation);
  • Efficiency: hourly output (t/h), system power (45 to 60 kWh/t range; calibrate), drying heat, metal consumption (tyre + liner cost per tonne of product);
  • Condition: mill vibration, reject flow and iron content, pressure-bed matching curve — the vibration trend is the combined health check of tyre life and bed condition.

Why not a ball mill? Slag is hard to grind and wet; a ball mill needs external drying (dryer or drying compartment), longer flowsheet, higher power. The integral drying of the VRM fits exactly — see the route verdict of cement grinding route comparison: heavy wet slag points to VRM finish grinding or separate slag grinding. II. A Field Lesson: Vibration Trips Rooted Not in the Mill but in the Yard

A 300,000-tonne-per-year slag line called for help: the VRM tripped frequently on vibration, output sat at eighty percent of design, and fresh tyres showed obvious wear within two months. The plant blamed mill quality. Three-step investigation on site:

  • 1. Feed moisture: 48 hours of continuous online moisture logging — moisture swung violently between eight and sixteen percent. Traced to the yard: slag dumped straight to pile, no drainage, no zoning; rainy-season and drained material mixed at reclaim, wet feed punctured the bed while dry stretches thinned it — vibration repeated by design;
  • 2. Spray-pressure matching: to suppress vibration the operators had cut grinding pressure; grinding efficiency fell and reject flow rose — the reject was rich in coarse iron granules, meaning the iron separator had failed; iron granules rolled on the table and accelerated local tyre wear;
  • 3. Tyre condition: inspection at standstill — circumferential grooves on the roller surface (iron plus wrong pressure stacked), remaining thickness at the renewal line; and the ledger entry claiming that tyre was two months old was in fact a used tyre swapped in — the life ledger was wrong from the root.

Three fixes: yard rebuilt (drainage zone + zoned reclaim + rain covers); iron removal upgraded to multi-stage with shift checks; tyre and table liner cost-per-tonne ledger established (record remaining thickness at change, amortise by tonnage). Two months later: vibration trips essentially gone, output back to design, tyres running on ledger-predicted cycles. The lesson in one line: the stability of a slag VRM line is managed into existence, not bought — yard drainage, iron removal and the tyre ledger, three basics, matter more than the mill brand.

III. Key Parameter and Acceptance Tables (Save These)

IV. Insider Gotchas

  • Design-value trap: rated capacity is usually calibrated on dry feed — acceptance must be judged at your actual feed moisture;
  • Mill swapped for system: furnace, dust collection, conveying and iron removal are all part of the system — staring at the mill brand while the system mismatches still trips the mill;
  • Inflated surface area: over-grinding buys surface area, not activity — watch the activity index and particle distribution, and do not pay power for pretty numbers;
  • Iron removal as decoration: slag carries iron granules; a failed separator equals ruined tyres plus a disturbed bed — multi-stage removal with shift checks;
  • Cheap tyre trap: prices differ by tens of percent, lives by more — judge by yuan per tonne of product, certificates on receipt;
  • Heat left out of the account: watching power only misses the furnace bill — on wet lines heat is a sizeable share; the system account is power plus heat;
  • Instantaneous vibration only: the weekly and monthly trend reflects tyre life and bed health; instantaneous values deceive.

V. When Not to Build a Separate Slag Line

  • Unstable slag supply: insufficient annual slag volume or long haul distance — a line with no feed; lock the source before building;
  • Small blend demand: where the local concrete market takes little slag powder, buying finished powder may beat building a line;
  • Only ordinary cement additives needed: low target surface (below 350 or so) with controllable moisture — the in-plant roller press or ball mill system can carry it; no separate VRM line required;
  • But these signals support building: stable slag resources nearby (steel plants or blast furnaces), strong local S95 demand, a cement plant extending its product chain, or resource-utilisation policy incentives in place.

Three actions: 1. Lock the feed account first (annual volume + moisture band + haul distance + price); 2. Accept the line against the parameter table (surface area / output / power plus heat / vibration) in a performance-bound manner; 3. Start the tyre and liner cost-per-tonne ledger with the very first set — your negotiation leverage three years from now lives in that ledger.

FAQ

  • Q: Why a vertical roller mill rather than a ball mill for slag? A: As-received moisture runs into the teens of percent and slag is hard to grind — a ball mill needs external drying, a longer flowsheet and higher power; the VRM dries, grinds and classifies in one, fitting exactly. Route logic in cement grinding route comparison.
  • Q: What surface area should S95 target? A: GB/T 18046 requires 400 m2/kg plus; common control 420 to 460 — beyond that power cost rises steeply while activity gains flatten; analyse jointly with the activity index and do not over-grind for pretty numbers.
  • Q: The VRM keeps tripping on vibration — what to do? A: Check in order: feed moisture (yard drainage, zoned reclaim), then bed versus spray-pressure matching, then tyre condition (thickness, grooves, iron removal). Most mill problems turn out to be yard management and failed iron removal — see the field case in Section II.
  • Q: What tyre life counts as normal? A: It depends heavily on slag abrasiveness, iron removal and the pressure regime — the right practice is a cost-per-tonne ledger (thickness at change, amortised by tonnage) with suppliers judged by yuan per tonne of product; do not trust verbal month counts.
  • Q: What system power is reasonable? A: 45 to 60 kWh/t range (calibrate on site) — on a system basis (main drive + fans + conveying), with furnace heat in the same account; main-drive-only figures understate badly.
  • Q: Separate or combined grinding with cement? A: Separate grinding is mainstream — slag ground alone to high surface area (activity fully expressed), blend ratio flexed at cement batching. In combined grinding slag is harder than clinker: the clinker gets over-ground while slag stays under-ground — both lose.
  • Q: How to size the line? A: Feed source and market set it together: annual slag supply is the ceiling, local concrete and blending demand the floor — lock the feed account (volume + moisture + haul + price) before talking scale.
  • Q: What does Grand Heavy offer? A: Grand Heavy supplies slag VRM roller tyres, table liners and other wear parts plus overlay repair service, with cost-per-tonne life ledger service as our signature — a supplier in the systems of CNBM and Conch Cement.

VI. Final Verdict

Configuring a slag powder line comes down to one line: the VRM is the only mainstream solution, but the fate of the line rests not on the mill nameplate — it rests on managing moisture, bed and roller tyres. Three disciplines: 1. yard drainage, zoned reclaim and multi-stage iron removal are the three basics that beat the mill brand; 2. accept against the parameter table (surface area, output, system power plus heat, vibration), never the design value; 3. start the cost-per-tonne tyre and liner ledger with the first set and negotiate by unit consumption.
