Manganese vs High-Chrome vs TiC Liners: A Decision Matrix with Honest Limits

Choosing a liner material is about balancing abrasion resistance against impact toughness — the wrong choice does not just cost more, it cracks early or wears out fast. Drawing on 15 years of field selection experience backed by 40 years of foundry practice (since the 1980s), Grand Heavy condenses the real differences between three mainstream materials into one decision table you can take straight to your plant — including a list of conditions where each material should NOT be used.

Quick View Verdict
One-line ruleHeavy impact: manganese. Severe abrasion: high chrome. Both: TiC embedded.
Key variablesRock hardness (abrasion) + feed size (impact) + downtime cost
Biggest mistakeComparing unit price without checking the feed — one cracked plate costs more than a spare set

I. The Physics Behind Three Materials

  • Manganese steel (Mn13/Mn18): the toughness king. Starts near HB200 and work-hardens under impact to about HB500 — the heavier the impact, the harder the surface, while the core stays tough. Water-toughened per GB/T 5680 at about 1050 deg C. [To be added: standard version year]
  • High chrome alloy: the hardness king. As-cast carbides reach above HRC58 for excellent abrasion resistance, but low toughness means cracking under tramp iron or oversized feed.
  • TiC embedded (starry liner): dual-phase design. TiC rods at 1400-2900 HV (per the material certificate in every batch) take the abrasion; the manganese body takes the impact. One pour, metallurgical bond.

II. A Costly Lesson From the Field

In summer 2026 a quarry swapped the lower jaw chamber from manganese to an uncertified high chrome plate to save cost. A tramp iron piece cracked the plate in 11 days, and the broken chunk scored the moving jaw — one saving turned into a week of downtime. Since then our rule is fixed: inspect the feed before recommending any material. High chrome never enters our recommendation list when the feed contains scrap iron.

In fine crushing chambers with even feed and mild impact, high chrome performs excellently. There is no best material — only the matched one. That is what the table below is for.

III. The Decision Table (Save This)

Your Condition Recommended Why Benchmark
Coarse crushing, big blocks, heavy impactManganese / TiC embeddedToughness first, no crackingGB/T 5680 water toughening
Granite / basalt in cone crusherTiC embedded (first choice)2-3x life under equal conditions (per records)Standard Mn13 = 1x baseline
Limestone, soft rockManganeseGood enough and most economical—
Fine crushing, even feed, no ironHigh chromeFull abrasion advantageAs-cast HRC58+ (no impact)
Iron ore / quartzite, high downtime costTiC embeddedFewer change-outs, less downtimeVerify with true-cost formula
Sticky wet feedFix packing firstChamber packing is not a liner issue—

How to use: match your feed and impact level first, then read the recommendation column. When two materials both qualify, run the true-cost formula (price x change-outs + downtime + labor) before ordering.

IV. Insider Gotchas

  • Manganese without manganese: GB/T 5680 requires 11-14% Mn. Lower content kills work-hardening. Always check the material certificate;
  • High chrome without heat treatment details: the same chemistry can vary nearly 2x in life depending on heat treatment. Ask for the hardness value;
  • Composite in name only: weld overlay is also called composite, but it is one class below metallurgical embedding. Request a bond-layer photo or section.

V. When NOT to Buy Each

  • TiC embedded: skip on soft limestone (slow payback) and sticky wet feed (fix packing first);
  • High chrome: avoid with tramp iron, oversized feed or coarse crushing (crack risk);
  • Manganese: weak choice in low-impact fine crushing — insufficient hardening means faster wear.

Three steps: 1. Send a feed sample for abrasion analysis; 2. Share current liner photos and change-out log; 3. Ask the supplier for a material and rod-layout proposal with a certificate commitment.

FAQ

  • Q: How do the three materials compare in price? A: With manganese as 1x, high chrome runs around 1.5x, TiC embedded higher. But true cost follows the formula — a 2-3x life plate (per records) often wins on hard rock.
  • Q: Can upper and lower chamber zones use different materials? A: Yes, and we recommend it. Heavy impact up top on a manganese body, denser TiC rods or embedded material at the bottom — Grand Heavy customizes by zone.
  • Q: How to judge feed abrasiveness quickly? A: Check silica content and rock hardness: granite, basalt and quartzite are highly abrasive; limestone and shale are not. Send a sample for testing.
  • Q: What should a material certificate include? A: At minimum the C, Mn, Cr, Ti contents and heat treatment state. Grand Heavy ships a certificate with every batch.
  • Q: Can I see the products in person? A: Visit our Foshan warehouse. Mantles and bowl liners and jaw plates in all three materials are on display.

VI. Final Verdict
