Jaw Plates, Bowl Liners and Mantles Wearing Too Fast? 7 Practical Tips to Extend Their Life

In the mining and aggregates industry, crusher wear parts — jaw plates, bowl liners (concaves), mantles, and blow bars — are among the largest recurring expenses. Many operators report that a set of jaw plates lasts less than 30,000 tonnes, or that a bowl liner wears through in just two months. Adding up the part cost and the downtime for change-outs, the annual bill is alarming. Is this really "normal wear"? In fact, most premature wear can be avoided through proper material selection, operating practice and maintenance.

Grand Heavy has spent 40 years in crusher wear parts, serving major groups such as CNBM and Conch Cement alongside hundreds of small and medium quarries. Here are seven practical tips distilled from real production lines.

1. Choose the Right Alloy Grade

Many buyers compare only on price, ignoring the alloy designation. Taking a bowl liner as an example, standard high-manganese steel (ZGMn13) and chromium-alloyed high-manganese steel (Mn18Cr2) differ by only 15-20% in price, but the latter can last 30-50% longer. On high-silica granite (SiO2 above 65%), plain Mn13 may barely survive two months, while Mn18Cr2 will run 3 to 4 months under the same duty.

Common alloy grades and their best applications:

  • Mn13 / ZGMn13: general-purpose, suits medium-to-low hardness with high impact (limestone, coal gangue);
  • Mn18Cr2: high-strength alloyed manganese steel for high-impact and high-abrasion duty (granite, basalt) — the mainstream upgrade for jaw plates and bowl liners;
  • Mn22CrMo: ultra-high manganese alloy for extreme conditions, 15-25% longer life than Mn18Cr2;
  • High-chrome cast iron (Cr26): for low-impact, high-abrasion duty, commonly used in impact crusher blow bars;
  • Tungsten carbide inserts: carbide blocks set in a manganese steel matrix can double service life — and double the cost — best for customers extremely sensitive to downtime.

Grand Heavy supports manufacture from customer drawings or on-site measurement, supplies all the above grades, and guarantees casting density and dimensional accuracy through more than 20 patented processes.

2. Do Not Set the CSS to the Absolute Minimum

The urge to crush "as fine as possible" by setting the closed-side setting to the machine minimum is common, but counter-productive: the smaller the CSS, the longer material lingers in the chamber, multiplying the number of compressive cycles on the liners and accelerating wear proportionally. Our recommendation: open the CSS by 5-10 mm beyond the minimum while still meeting downstream requirements. This alone can extend liner life by 20-30% and simultaneously increase throughput.

3. Feed Evenly; Prevent Tramp Metal and Side-Loading

Uneven feeding is the number-one hidden cause of premature liner failure. When feed drifts to one side of the jaw or cone, unilateral wear accelerates sharply. More dangerous is tramp metal — bucket teeth, drill bits or other iron entering the chamber, causing instant jaw plate cracking or localized bowl liner puncture. The fix is inexpensive: install a magnetic separator ahead of the feeder. A few thousand RMB in equipment can prevent a multi-thousand-RMB liner loss.

4. Rotate and Flip Jaw Plates for a Second Service Life

On jaw crushers, wear concentrates in the lower third of the plate while the upper portion remains relatively intact. If the design permits, swapping the top and bottom positions (or flipping the plate end-for-end on symmetrical designs) restores a fresh wear surface and can add another 30-50% of productive life at zero part cost.

5. Replace Mantle and Bowl Liner as a Pair

The bowl liner (stationary outer liner) and mantle (rotating inner liner) on a cone crusher are a matched set. Replacing only the faster-wearing one while keeping the other creates a geometric mismatch: material trajectories inside the chamber shift, product shape deteriorates, and the new liner wears even faster. Always change both together. The added cost of the second part is more than offset by longer total life and stable product quality.

6. Set Up a Liner Thickness Monitoring Routine

Waiting until a liner wears through before changing it not only costs production volume but can damage the crusher body itself (once the mantle is gone, the main shaft absorbs direct impact). A simple weekly measurement of the thinnest remaining liner section with calipers, compared against a safety threshold (typically 30-40% of original thickness), enables planned change-outs that are far less costly than forced shutdowns.

7. Buy from the Source Factory

The wear-parts market is crowded with inconsistent quality. A bowl liner labeled "Mn18Cr2" from different suppliers may contain wildly different actual chemistry and heat treatment. Sub-standard product with manganese content below 16% and internal shrinkage cavities can crack within days of installation. A source factory provides full material test reports, metallographic analysis, and the ability to customize alloy formulations for your specific rock.

Grand Heavy operates foundries at its Foshan headquarters and Changsha base. Every part is individually tested for chemical composition and hardness before shipment, with full quality traceability.
