As the core working part of a jaw crusher in direct contact with the material, the fixed jaw plate has a service life influenced by multiple factors. Compression and abrasion caused by the material on the jaw plate surface are the main causes of fixed jaw plate failure, but in actual production many non-abrasive factors also significantly shorten the replacement cycle. These factors involve equipment installation and assembly, operation and maintenance, and equipment parameter matching. This article systematically reviews and analyzes the major non-abrasive factors.
The installation quality of the fixed jaw plate directly affects its stress state and wear rate during operation. Deviations and carelessness during installation are often hidden causes of premature jaw plate damage.
Poor contact and stress concentration. If the jaw plate does not fit tightly against the frame (jaw body) surface and the gap exceeds the allowable range, the jaw plate will vibrate locally under impact loads, creating stress concentration zones that accelerate wear. Data show that if the installation gap exceeds 0.5 mm, the wear rate in that area can be 30% faster than elsewhere. During installation, ensure full contact between the jaw plate and the machine body; if necessary, insert a layer of plastic material such as lead plate or cement mortar between the surfaces to eliminate gaps and ensure uniform loading.
Improper fastening leading to loosening. During operation, the direct force between material and jaw plates is considerable, especially with hard materials. The jaw plate bolts receive periodic impact and the nuts tend to loosen. Once loose, the jaw plate's positional shift grows with each crushing cycle, generating greater impact forces in a vicious cycle. Worse, if loosening persists unaddressed, bolts may fail by fatigue fracture; the jaw plate loses its fixation, swings violently in the crushing chamber, and may even collide directly with the frame. Simply tightening nuts and bolts before startup cannot completely solve this problem. Experience shows that adding springs to the fixing bolts enhances anti-loosening and vibration-damping capability and effectively extends jaw plate life.
Parallelism deviation. When assembling the fixed and moving jaw plates, both must be kept in the same plane of parallelism to avoid relative sliding between the plates and the material during operation, which causes wear or breakage. Excessive parallelism deviation leads to uneven contact area with the material, higher local stress, and faster wear.
Operating parameters that do not match the working conditions significantly affect fixed jaw plate life.
Eccentric shaft speed too high. The eccentric shaft speed is a key parameter of a jaw crusher, directly affecting production capacity and jaw plate wear rate. When speed exceeds the design range, crushed material cannot be discharged in time, the crushing chamber becomes congested, and material is repeatedly compressed and ground between the plates, accelerating wear. Statistics show that a speed 10% above the design value can shorten jaw plate life by about 20%. Conversely, too low a speed reduces crushing efficiency and prolongs material residence, also increasing wear. Proper speed should be determined by material properties and machine specification.
Unreasonable discharge opening setting. A discharge opening that is too small increases material residence time in the chamber, exposing the fixed jaw plate to longer compression and abrasion. In practice this is common — operators chasing finer output may set the discharge opening too small, ignoring the cost of jaw plate wear. Test data show that adjusting the discharge opening from 50 mm to 70 mm can reduce wear per unit output by about 22%. The discharge setting should balance the required output size against jaw plate life.
Excessive nip angle. If the angle between the fixed and moving jaw plates (nip angle) exceeds the normal range, material tends to slide upward during crushing, increasing friction and wear on the plate surfaces. A reasonable nip angle is generally controlled between 18° and 22°, where crushing is dominated by compression with relatively little sliding wear.
Feeding practice directly affects the stress state and service life of the fixed jaw plate.
Uneven feeding. Feeding too fast or unevenly distributes material unevenly in the chamber, overloading parts of the fixed jaw plate and accelerating wear. Using a vibrating feeder instead of direct belt feeding reduces impact eccentric loading and makes jaw plate wear more uniform. If the feeder is installed at too steep an angle or too far above the crusher, material dropped from height hits the plates with strong impact, directly aggravating impact wear.
Oversized feed. Lumps exceeding the crusher's maximum feed size subject the jaw plate to instantaneous impact loads, causing chipping or local denting and severely shortening life. When oversize particles make up a high proportion of the feed, jaw plate life may be markedly shortened. Before material enters the jaw crusher, control the size within the machine's specified range by screening or pre-crushing.
Failure to adjust for material variation. The material handled by many crushers changes over time, but equipment parameters are not adjusted accordingly. Materials of different hardness wear jaw plates at very different rates: when crushing hard materials such as granite or basalt, wear can be 2–3 times faster than with medium/low-hardness materials like limestone. If material properties change without adjusting parameters (speed, discharge opening, nip angle), jaw plate wear can deteriorate sharply.
Tramp iron and hard contaminants. Iron pieces or hard stones mixed into the feed impact and severely abrade the jaw plates and can even fracture them. Install iron-removal equipment before the jaw crusher to remove tramp metal and protect the plates from abnormal wear.
Choking and improper clearing. At high reduction ratios, material tends to choke in the chamber; rock cannot discharge smoothly and slides back and forth under the plates, drastically increasing wear. Worse, some operators resort to blasting to clear choke-ups. Although fast, the excessive shock directly alters the jaw plate's internal structure — no visible surface damage, but fine internal cracks form, doubling the subsequent wear rate.
The material selection and manufacturing quality of the jaw plate itself is a fundamental factor in service life.
Material mismatched to conditions. Different jaw plate materials suit different conditions. High manganese steel (e.g., ZGMn13) work-hardens: under impact its surface hardness rises from about 180 HB to over 500 HB. But when crushing medium/low-hardness soft rock, the impact is insufficient to harden it fully, and its wear resistance is actually inferior to other materials. Choose the jaw plate material according to material hardness, machine size, and other factors. Large crushers with heavy impact loads can use modified or dispersion-strengthened high manganese steel; small and medium crushers with lighter impact can use medium-carbon low-alloy steel or high chromium cast iron / low alloy steel composite materials.
Casting defects. Defects such as porosity and sand holes from casting become starting points of wear once the jaw plate is in service, accelerating failure. Impurities in the plate cause stress concentration; cracks easily initiate at impurity edges, reducing fatigue life. When purchasing jaw plates, pay attention to casting quality and prefer plates that have received proper heat treatment such as water toughening.
Improper heat treatment. High manganese steel jaw plates require water toughening to obtain a uniform microstructure. Improper temperature control causes grain coarsening and a marked drop in wear resistance. The water toughening temperature must be strictly controlled between 1050°C and 1100°C, with holding time calculated as 1 hour per 25 mm of plate thickness. Non-standard treatment significantly reduces wear performance.
The crusher's own structural design and manufacturing precision also affect fixed jaw plate life.
Foundation stability. The crusher must be mounted on a concrete foundation with adequate load-bearing capacity. Insufficient foundation rigidity or excessive installation level error shifts the moving jaw's swing trajectory and aggravates one-sided jaw plate wear. Local settlement of the foundation after long-term operation also affects uniform loading of the plates.
Jaw plate structural design. Structural parameters such as tooth profile and thickness distribution affect stress distribution in service. Rational design helps distribute stress and reduce local stress concentration, extending jaw plate life. For small and medium jaw crushers, the jaw plate can be designed symmetric top-to-bottom so it can be reversed after the lower section wears, extending the service time of each plate.
Without systematic inspection and maintenance management, all the adverse factors above accumulate and compound during operation, ultimately accelerating fixed jaw plate failure.
Lack of routine inspection. If problems such as loose jaw plate bolts, abnormal discharge opening, or uneven feeding are not discovered in time, minor issues evolve into premature jaw plate failure. Establish a regular inspection regime — measuring jaw plate wear, checking fastener condition, listening for abnormal operating noise — to intervene at an early stage.
Lack of lubrication and upkeep. Although lubrication does not act on the jaw plates directly, good lubrication reduces wear and vibration in other components and indirectly provides stable working conditions for the plates. Check the lubrication system regularly to ensure oil is sufficient and clean, supporting smooth overall operation.
